Work against Corruption
Devkabai Yadav, 42-year-old, short height woman is a resident of village Nachna, in Harrai development block in Chhindwara district. She lives 70 km away from the district headquarters. She feels very much comfortable in meetings and puts her forth with full confidence.
When she got the opportunity to participate in woman leadership festival in Bhopal, she put forth her views with full confidence. She said that it was the time for the women to wake up. If they accept every hardship without saying anything, nothing will go in their favour. Panchayats runs various plans; if they feel that these plans are not being implemented properly, they should discuss the matter in organisations' meeting.
She narrated one of her experiences in these words: "Sarpanch was taking Rs 100 to issue a poverty line card. When I asked for my card, he demanded money. I questioned him for what I shall pay; if you would not give it to me, I can get it issued at the district level. The Sarpanch said from where she got such information and for what she was showing leadership. I told him whatever I am saying is correct. Without going for a debate, he issued me the card and also to the six persons along with me without cost."
Her shared another experience: "Concrete cement road was being built in the village. I asked the Sarpanch of the labour rate, who said that it would be taken care of. I told the labourers that the wage rate was Rs 63, and suggested him not to accept lesser than the same. The Sarpanch tried paying Rs 50 as wages, which was objected by the labourers. I was not at home. Sarpanch went back, and the next day when I came, full payment was made."
After her return from Bhopal, she organised a rally on issues pertaining to 50 per cent reservation for women, awareness and Gram Sabha. A meeting was called just after. The issue was related to an assistant who was fired from her work by the anganwadi worker. When her stipend for the year was deposited in the bank, the anganwadi worker lured her, withdrew Rs 4,000 from her account, gave Rs 1,000 to the assistant and kept Rs 3,000 on his own. The organisation raised the issue and a complaint against the worker was lodged with Senior Divisional Magistrate.
