PTA President Exercised His Right

Tribal dominant village Manakwari in Harrai development block in Chhindwara district is situated besides the Harad river. The confidence of Adivasi Shramik Sangathan to initiate development work for the village has become their habit. Whether it is teachers' carelessness, government employee, or local politicians' mistake, the people stand united against them and stop only after getting success.

This is a story of their success. Ravi Shanker Chaubey, secretary in Parent Teacher Association, is working as an assistant teacher in the village. PTA president, Dashrath Dhurve occasionally meets him informally in the school, or sometimes in the village. He was very simple and unaware of his rights. The teacher took advantage of his simplicity and without telling any kind of accounting work used to get his signature on the cheques. President never gave a thought to this, never asked any detail, and took it as a way of performing the government duties.

Prayas Sanstha, Amarwara, organised a three day camp on woman leadership. Arsibai, Memwatibai and Saklibai from the village attended the training camp. They learnt that the village people are solely responsible for the development of the village. Gram Sabha has given them many rights and PTA president has got many rights in the field of education. On reaching the village after getting the training, they discussed the issues in their organisations’ meeting.

In February 2006, a meeting was organised in the primary school building in Manakwari. The villagers asked for every financial detail of mid-day-meal from the PTA secretary Ravi Shanker Chaubey. They asked him about the bank passbook as well. After a session of hot discussions, the secretary accepted his defeat, pleaded guilty, and took four days time to clear everything. It was decided that all money transactions shall be informed to the president; and the financial details be told to the Gram Sabha.

A meeting was conducted again after four days in which Ravi Shanker Chaubey presented the financial details in front of PTA president. After knowing his rights, Dashrath Dhurve accepted that exercising the right is very important and could not be neglected.
